The Girl Who Never Was Otherworld Book One Skylar Dorset Books
I read this in one sitting, something I haven't done with a book in a very long time. It takes some time to get an handle on what's going on, but as our protagonist is just as confused as we are, I wasn't thrown off by that. It feels like Dorset really knows this world and characters, even those we only get glimpses of. It feels fully realized, without bogging you down with information. You know there is so much more that you aren't being told, but you feel like you will be when the time is right. I haven't started the second book yet, but I think is the start of something fantastic.Tags : Amazon.com: The Girl Who Never Was: Otherworld Book One (9781402292538): Skylar Dorset: Books,Skylar Dorset,The Girl Who Never Was: Otherworld Book One,Sourcebooks Fire,1402292538,Fantasy - General,Mothers and daughters;Fiction.,Prophecies;Fiction.,Supernatural;Fiction.,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fairies,Fantasy,Fantasy & Magic,Fiction,Princesses,Science fiction (Children's Teenage),YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy General,Young Adult Fiction Fantasy Contemporary,Young Adult Fiction Legends, Myths, Fables General,Young Adult Fiction Romance General,Young Adult FictionLegends, Myths, Fables - General,Young Adult FictionRomance - General
The Girl Who Never Was Otherworld Book One Skylar Dorset Books Reviews
This little tease pulled me in from the beginning. When I reached the end I was eager to get a copy of the book in my hands. Of course now that I have 'The Girl Who Kissed a Lie' I want to hold off reading it as long as I can. I'm afraid I'll finish it in one sitting!
I really enjoyed this "faerie" tale. It was fun and imaginative. I liked the characters and the way they evolved....now I am going to have to get the next book!
This book was recommended to me by one of my students. She was right, the book was; a sweet fantasy, a beautiful love story, full of suspense and intrigue. I must hurry to start the next book!
Deftly balancing fantasy and romance, this smart debut novel takes a wild ride from a richly imagined alternative Boston to a nether world that surpasses Oz and Azkaban. With a deep understanding of the genre, Dorset combines familiar tropes into a stunningly original adventure of self discovery. And she knows when to add just the right amount of quirky humor. (The disappearing mother is "flighty.")
Dorset's writing is a pleasure to read. She can even be poetic when the story calls for it. She has a gift for both dialog and descriptions, but the action never lags. Secrecy is a big theme. And revealing ANY details of the inventive plot would spoil the fun of discovery. Warning do not even think of starting to read this book the day before you have a final exam. You won't be able to put it down to study.
The hard copy version is beautifully produced, from the cover illustration to the size of the type and generous spacing between the lines.
Is it too soon to pre-order the sequel?
I very much enjoyed this book. I knew I would, if only for the fact that love of Boston shines through, but I ended up loving it for so many more reasons than that.
There are nods to the genre that came before it -- not just YA, but fairy tales in general. Selfie absentmindedly collects things she finds, sure they'll come in useful later (like many a fairy tale character, but it brings back vivid memories of Baba Yaga for me). The Salem Which? museum is very funny but also reminds me of so many books where there are places where the real world is slightly askew and behind them are adventures.
I'm looking forward the rest of the series.
I normally shy away from young adult books, but this one was a great read! The book really takes off after the first couple of chapters and becomes a suspenseful ride. I can't wait to read her next book! The author does a fantastic job showing what an adolescent girl must be thinking and going through when she finds out the truth about herself and her family. Oh, and if you are from Boston, you'll really enjoy the bits of local humor. I don't want to give too much away, so pour yourself a cup of tea, sit back, and read the book!
This book is one of the best books on the bookstore even the title pulls you in, praying ill be able to get the next one The Boy With The Hidden Name, the characters secrets make it impossible to put down I read the book completely at one time and never put my kindle down, Join Benedict Selkie, Will, and the others in The Girl Who Never Was
