This series of books was recommended to me by @thevampireariella, and for that I have to say "Thank you, Katina". This was an incredibly well-crafted novel, written in diary form, similar to Bram Stoker's original Dracula..
Arcady Tsepesh is the great-nephew of Vlad Tsepesh, but is unaware that his relative is not just an 80-year-old prince, but the original Vlad the Impaler, 400 years old and a true vampire. Now Vlad wants Arcady to join the family business. With the diary entries of Arcady and his English-born wife Mary, this novel tells the story of familial love, regret and betrayal in the years before Stoker's Dracula storyline begins.
.
This tale is much easier to follow than Dracula, in that there are fewer diarists to confuse the timeline or point-of-view. The action scenes in this novel are few and far between, but the depth of characterization is enough to keep the reader interested. Kalogridis has created a masterful beginning to what is sure to be a wonderful series.

Covenant with the Vampire The Diaries of the Family Dracul Jeanne Kalogridis 9780440215431 Books Reviews
I had this book in paper format but don't remember the entire story and since there are now two other books following this I ordered it again as version. I like the overall story and blot (although a bit predictable at times). The writing style is done in form of diary entries from the three main characters and adds a certain charm and perspective to the story that you normally would not get if it was written only in first person. It's definitely worth a read if you want a good Dracula story that holds true to the roots of the myth in the old country of Romania. It's also refreshing to pick up a book that has grown-up characters and portraits vampires as the dark and evil creatures we love and doesn't go into another dealing with a sparkly vampire that has to manage his ever-growing teenage feelings for the girl next door........
Don't get me wrong these books certainly have their audience but the market seems a bit over saturated with supernatural teenage novels and this old fashion story about Dracula from with a different angle provides a nice break from that.
I have always loved stories about them, this one is very enjoyable. Leaving a healthy desire for more. Jeanne is a great verbal artist carefully drawing a written depiction of the times and simple terrors of the superstitious minds and lives suffering such prolonged agonies of life. Great read for us all.
First and foremost, I must begin with that I really overall enjoy Jeanne's books. However this book for some reason, I just could not seem to connect with it. I did finish the book because I wanted to know what happened. I felt the book had a great deal of slow moments but after getting through those moments other scenarios were a lot better. I have not decided if I will read the other books in the trilogy. Maybe I will make a decision once I look at the reviews for the other books.
I've read all 3 and what an entertaining ride! I read in spurts, and when I can't find something wonderful that I lose myself in, I quit. I started this spurt with Bram Stoker's Dracula and I loved it and the way it was written. My sister told me about this prequel series, written in similar (and better) style. Now I've finished all 3 and loved each and every one! Now, my only problem is finding something as good.
This book is well worth at least twice paid. I never wanted to put it down. I'd be falling asleep just trying to read a little more. You are instantly grabbed and pulled in, there is no hoping it gets bigger or slow moments. The way the author lays out the scenes it is easy to be there with the characters. I have not been this excited about a vampire series since the vampire chronicles by Ann rice. I can't wait to continue to the next book. At the end of this book you get a glimpse into the next and I'm already loving it!
I found this trilogy quite enjoyable. It is very well written, with an engrossing plot and good character development. The vampire theme is very traditional, no glamorous teen love here! Being the first in the trilogy, it was easy to get lost in the story very quickly. Adult themes not for those with a weak stomach.
This is a novel that left me breathless, turning the pages until long into the night. It is the first book of a trilogy. Without doubt, this trilogy is the most beautifully written vampire novels ever written. Through beautiful and profound prose, and in diary format, Jeanne Kalogridis reveals the story of Arkady Tsepesh and how he and his pregnant wife return to Transyvannia after the death of his father. The firstborn heir is expected to be the main council or aid to patriarch/uncle Vlad Dracula. Strange, evil, horrifying things begin to occur immediately, setting the grim, tense mood that only grows more intense until the end of the book.
Covenenant with the Vampire is intended to be a prelude to Bram Stoker's Dracula. She writes in the same style as the classic author, but her prose far supercedes that of SToker (Sorry Bram - but with Jeanne you've met your match!) If you like a book filled with the odd and unusual that will shock and horrify you with its evil darkness as innocents try to overcome the evil Vlad, then this is a must, must read. A roller coaster ride that sends one chill up your spin just as another begins! Get it - I really mean it. The best vampire stories currently available bar none!
